Our Collection

We recognise our important role as kaitiaki for taonga and objects that have shaped our past and the people who have called this place home.

An important part of the Museum's role and responsibilities is to assess items from our collection.

Policies and procedures that inform this process are based on best Museum practice and include:

  • Taonga Māori policy.

  • New Acquisitions policy.

  • Deaccessioning policy.

  • Collections policy.

All items are fully researched by our qualified curators, before a decision is made with the Museum Manager on the next steps.

Our pathway is as follows:

  1. Items of significance are catalogued, retained, packaged to Museum standards, and details and photographs are uploaded to e-hive, an online digital library used by Museums worldwide. These items also used to shape our decision-making regarding exhibition planning, and support our story telling.

  2. Objects or taonga that do not have provenance are most often re-housed to other Museums or institutions.

  3. Deaccessioned items will most often be retained and become a handling item to feature in our Memory Trunk and School-based programmes
