Education is at the heart of our kaupapa

We are proud of the long-term relationships we have built with our local schools, and pleased to provide out-of-classroom interactive programmes to support curriculum-aligned learning.

Taonga o te Taiao – Treasuring our Place

Environmental Education Programme

Taonga o te Taiao is a partnership between Western Bay Museum, Katikati Primary School, Project Parore and Rotary Club of Katikati.  We have delivered this programme for the past 7 years and is especially environmental education for all year 5 & 6 students at Katikati Primary.

The last two years we have especially focused on Te Araawa, native tree bush block on the school grounds that had fallen into disrepair, overgrown with weeds and an unsafe area for the children to use or explore.  Our environmental educators have used this as an opportunity and with the students totally engagement in weed identification, a bioblitz, bird survey, weeding, clearing of rubbish, pest and predator controls and planting we have transformed the space.

We are all committed to this space and proud of our achievements. This programme enables all students to engage and participate.  It provides an opportunity for those that don’t always excel in the classroom but flourish in nature.
