Celebrating Our Partnership with Te Papa National Services Te Paerangi
We are privileged to have National Services Te Paerangi, Te Papa Support! It has been a decade of the most incredible support and guidance that any person working in the museum sector could wish for. National Services Te Paerangi is a team at Te Papa who provide support to museums and galleries across Aotearoa.
Working in a small rural museum can be very daunting, especially when trying to take a ‘private collection’ to a credible museum standard. Although isolated I have always been a phone call, zoom and or email away from the most amazing support from our country’s best curators, designers, conservators and advisors.
I guess like any industry; you don’t understand or appreciate the skills, qualification and expertise that is required in any industry or profession until you work in it!
Initially it was more about procedure, policies, museum and collection management. Over the years we were also involved in Expert Knowledge Exchange programmes. We had a conservator of costume and textiles work at our museum on two occasions. Sam Gatley mounted two gowns for safe display/exhibition; the Killen bustle gown 1870s and the Sharp bustle gown 1880s. Sam was with us for four days to complete the task on both occasions; and we opened these events to the public in order to share this expertise to our communities. Through this programme we also had Rosemary Deane, a Collections Curator with 25 years’ experience work with us to firstly develop a true collection process. This eventually led to a permanent position as Rosemary became our first Collections Manager seven years ago.
